Here are the five most important items to check off when walking into a shop. (1) Certification: This is the most important consideration. The diamond must have a GIA or AGS certificate. There is no way to know whether you are getting a good deal unless you are certain what the diamond characteristics are. Unfortunately, there are many less stringent laboratories that will inflate the quality claims. This makes it easy to fall into a trap of unknowingly overpaying for a lower quality diamond. Fortunately for you, the overwhelming majority of places we went to in Hong Kong strictly offered GIA certified diamonds.(2) Fluorescence: This issue normally isn’t so high, but the shops in Hong Kong were better than the typical retailers we have seen around the world. Certification and Cut weren’t as much of an issue as in other places, though you should still be careful. Fluorescence was a lingering nuisance while shopping. Many of the colorless diamonds had medium or strong fluorescence, which is a big no-no. (3) Cut: Most of the round diamonds we saw were excellent cut diamonds. That is a great start. To make sure the brilliance is maximized, try to keep the depth percentage below 62.5% and the table below 60%. DIAMOND 4C: Each of the 4 C’s (Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat) play a role in a diamond’s beauty, though it is difficult to decipher one component by itself. As a comprehensive whole, the 4 C’s interact with one another within each diamond. As a general rule, we suggest a high quality Cut above all else—as this greatly impacts a diamond’s beauty and brilliance—while balancing a fine line on Color and Clarity to get the best bang for your buck. With the right Cut, both a 0.9 Carat Round Brilliant (K Color, VS2 Clarity) like this one from Blue Nile and a 1.5 Carat Round Brilliant (I Color, SI1 Clarity) also from Blue Nile can be stunning. It is imperative that you find the right balance of diamond characteristics and value using the 4C’s.  Let’s say you have a budget of $5,000. You have three options: You can go with the absolute best quality possible and then you end up with only a 3/4ct diamond. You can ignore quality and up with a 1.75ct diamond that looks terrible like this one from James Allen. Or you can find the right balance and end up with a beautiful 1.25ct diamond like this from Blue Nile. 

WHAT ARE THE 4 C’S OF DIAMONDS? A diamond’s quality is determined by the 4C’s: (a)Cut- Quality of the angles, proportions, facets, and finishing details. (b)Color: How colorless the diamond is.(d)Clarity: How clean the diamond is of inclusions and blemishes. (e)Carat: The weight of the diamond. These four qualities of a diamond are the key components that impact its beauty and structure. The 4C’s interact with each other within the diamond. They dictate how the diamond appears and how high quality it is. As an example, the diamond’s ability to reflect light back to your eyes depends primarily on cut quality but also on color and clarity.  The four diamond characteristics are graded by professionals on a consistent scale, giving you a tool to evaluate diamonds. By reviewing the 4C’s of a particular diamond, you can better determine if the diamond is of high-quality. The GIA and the AGS are the prominent institutions with a sophisticated grading system for evaluating diamond characteristics. They are the most consistent entities and the ones we recommend gaining a diamond certificate from. Each of the C’s are graded on a scale, and can be evaluated for quality. Though some universal terminology and standard grading exists, it does vary by lab entity.
